A season of upheaval saw Heriberto Herrera’s spell at Inter come to an end following a disappointing start to the campaign, with Giovanni Invernizzi taking charge of the team. Under their new head coach, the Nerazzurri finished the first half of the season just three points behind city rivals AC Milan at the top of the table. The campaign also marked the debuts of future club legends Ivano Bordon and Gabriele Oriali. Inter began the second half of the season in outstanding fashion, including a derby victory inspired by goals from Mario Corso and Sandro Mazzola. The Nerazzurri surged to the top of the standings and never looked back, wrapping up the Scudetto with three matches remaining thanks to a commanding 5–0 win over Foggia. It was also a remarkable season for striker Roberto Boninsegna, who scored 24 goals in just 28 league appearances.
