An Inter side built with one clear objective: to win. Yet the road to success was anything but straightforward. The 1988/89 season began with disappointment, as Giovanni Trapattoni’s team were knocked out of the Coppa Italia by Fiorentina. But that extraordinary squad only grew stronger, forging an unbreakable bond built on unity of purpose, outstanding quality and an insatiable hunger for victory.
Lothar Matthäus led the way. The German midfielder was the driving force behind the team, while Trapattoni orchestrated every move from the touchline. This was an Inter side that knew how to suffer, defend with resilience and rely on Walter Zenga’s extraordinary saves in the toughest moments, before striking with the finishing of Aldo Serena and Ramón Díaz. Andreas Brehme surged down the left flank, delivering pinpoint crosses and unleashing thunderous shots. Matthäus dominated every midfield battle, leaving opponents chasing shadows while earning the adoration of the Nerazzurri faithful. Unstoppable and inspirational, he was the heartbeat of the team. Captain Giuseppe Bergomi was its rock, equally commanding in defence and influential going forward, while Nicola Berti quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his relentless runs, crucial goals and unforgettable celebrations.
Matthäus also delivered on the season's defining day. On 28 May 1989, at San Siro against Napoli, his unstoppable free-kick secured Inter’s thirteenth Scudetto with four matches still to play. It was a record at the time, one that was followed by an even more remarkable achievement at the end of the campaign. On 25 June, with a 2–0 victory over Fiorentina, Inter finished the season on 58 points, setting a new benchmark in Italian football. Thirty-four matches, 26 wins, six draws, only two defeats, 67 goals scored and just 19 conceded: the numbers behind a truly unforgettable campaign.
"Unique, wonderful, something we set out to achieve from the very first day."
"We won, we convinced, we thrilled."
"We're legendary. We're emotional. Above all, we're happy for our fans."
With the Scudetto already secured, the victory over Fiorentina on 25 June 1989 sealed one of the greatest league campaigns in Italian football history. It was the Inter of records.
