C’è grandissima attesa per l’ultimo impegno dei nerazzurri nel Gruppo E del Mondiale per Club FIFA: la squadra di Chivu sfiderà il River Plate nella gara decisiva per l’accesso alla fase ad eliminazione diretta. Il fischio d'inizio del match è previsto al Lumen Field di Seattle mercoledì 25 giugno alle 18:00 locali (le 3:00 del mattino del 26 giugno in Italia). I PRECEDENTI

Quella tra River e Inter è una sfida inedita a livello ufficiale, ma i nerazzurri hanno affrontato il club di Buenos Aires in un'amichevole disputata a Milano nel 1961. Nell'estate di quell'anno venne organizzato uno speciale torneo internazionale per celebrare il Centenario dell'Unità d'Italia: il Torneo Italia ebbe come partecipanti Inter, Juventus, Napoli, Roma, Racing Parigi, River Plate, Santos e Sparta Praga. Dopo aver battuto 7-1 lo Sparta, l'Inter affrontò il River Plate a San Siro il 21 giugno 1961, in una partita che il Corriere della Sera dell'epoca definisce "bella ed emozionante", davanti a circa 75.000 spettatori. Questa la formazione nerazzurra: Da Pozzo, Picchi, Masiero, Zaglio, Guarneri, Balleri, Bicicli, Lindskog, Bettini, Suarez, Corso. L'amichevole terminò con il risultato di 1-1: l'Inter passò in vantaggio al 31' con un gol di Corso, segnato di testa su cross di Bicicli, abilissimo a scambiare velocemente il pallone prima con Suarez e poi con Zaglio. Il River riuscì a pareggiare nella ripresa con un gol su punizione dal limite di Moacyr: con il pareggio l'Inter si qualificò alla finale del Torneo, persa 4-1 contro il Santos di Pelé.

Contro l’Urawa ha creato ben sette occasioni da gol, fornendo anche l’assist per il primo centro nerazzurro. Non a caso, il centrocampista è stato inserito nella Top 11 della seconda giornata della competizione.

L'AVVERSARIO: IL RIVER PLATE

Il River Plate è una delle squadre più leggendarie del Sudamerica: si è qualificato al Mondiale per Club grazie al suo punteggio nel ranking della CONMEBOL. Gli argentini arrivano alla sfida contro l'Inter dopo aver battuto 3-1 gli Urawa Red Diamonds e pareggiato per 0-0 contro il Monterrey. Nella loro storia hanno vinto 37 campionati argentini, record nazionale e 4 Copa Libertadores, l’ultima arrivata nel 2018 dopo la storica finale contro i rivali di sempre del Boca Juniors. Quello del 2018 è anche l’ultimo successo di una squadra argentina nella competizione, che dal 2019 in avanti è stata vinta solamente da squadre brasiliane. Nel 2024 il River è stato eliminato in semifinale dall’Atletico Mineiro (3-0 e 0-0 nel doppio confronto): nell'edizione 2025, attualmente in corso i Millonarios hanno concluso da imbattuti la fase a gironi iniziale, collezionando 12 punti con tre vittorie e tre pareggi. Risultati che hanno permesso al River Plate di chiudere al primo posto in classifica il Gruppo B, lasciandosi alle spalle l'Universitario di Lima, l'Independiente del Valle e il Barcellona di Guayaquil.
